Summary: | To provide a surface treating agent for fibers, which has excellent antibacterial properties and durability, hardly affects the water absorbability of fibers, enables the formation of a coating film that is less likely to degrade fibers, and has high liquid stability.SOLUTION: Provided is a surface treating agent for fibers, which comprises (A) a silane compound that is a hydrolysate and/or a condensation reaction product of a tetraalkoxysilane (A1) and a silane coupling agent (A2), (B) a silver salt and/or a silver complex, (C) an organic acid having at least two carboxyl groups, and (E) water, and which is prepared so as to satisfy the following blend requirements (1) and (2). (1) The molar ratio {(A1+A2)/B} of the total (A1+A2) of the tetraalkoxysilane (A1) and the silane coupling agent (A2) to the silver salt and/or the silver complex (B) is 100 to 500. (2) The molar ratio (C/B) of the carboxyl groups in the organic acid (C) to the silver salt and/or the silver complex (B) is 5 to 25.SELECTED DRAWING: None
