Summary:To improve the brightness of irradiation light in a lighting device, etc., that uses a liquid crystal element.SOLUTION: Provided is a liquid crystal element including: a first and a second substrate; a liquid crystal layer composed using a liquid crystal material of negative dielectric anisotropy that contains a chiral material and substantially vertically oriented having a pretilt angle of less than 90°; a first polarizing plate arranged on the first substrate side; and a second polarizing plate arranged on the second substrate side. The first and second polarizing plates have their mutual transmission axes substantially orthogonally arranged. When a voltage 2.5 times a threshold is applied to the liquid crystal layer, the angle formed by the first and second orientation directions that are the actual orientation directions in the interface between the liquid crystal layer and each of the first and second substrates is 70° to 110° inclusive, the angle formed by the transmission axis of the first polarizing plate and the first orientation direction is 110° or less to 70° or greater, and the angle formed by the transmission axis of the second polarizing plate and the second orientation direction is 110° or less to 70° or greater.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】液晶素子を用いる照明装置等における照射光の明るさを向上させること。【解決手段】第1基板及び第2基板と、カイラル材を含有する負の誘電率異方性の液晶材料を用いて構成され、90°未満のプレティルト角を有して略垂直配向している液晶層と、前記第1基板側に配置された第1偏光板と、前記第2基板側に配置された第2偏光板と、を含み、前記第1偏光板と前記第2偏光板は、互いの透過軸を略直交に配置されており、前記液晶層へ閾値の2.5倍以上の電圧が印加されたときに前記液晶層と前記第1基板及び前記第2基板の各々との界面における実質的な配向方位である第1配向方位及び第2配向方位とのなす角度が70°以上110°以下であり、前記第1偏光板の透過軸と前記第1配向方位とのなす角度が110°以下70°以上であり、かつ前記第2偏光板の透過軸と前記第2配向方位とのなす角度が110°以下70°以上である、液晶素子である。【選択図】図1
