Summary:To provide an electrochromic display element that is excellent in transparency, inhibits cracks in a coloring layer, and has good appearance and performance characteristics.SOLUTION: An electrochromic display element comprises a first substrate 11, a first electrode 13, a first electrochromic layer 15, an electrolyte layer 17, a second electrode 14, and a second substrate 12 in this order. The first electrochromic layer contains tin oxide with a primary average particle diameter of less than 30 nm, and an electrochromic compound including a bond functional group to the tin oxide.
