To grasp the orientation of a growth direction of a columnar crystal structure of a metal inspection object in a non-destructive manner.SOLUTION: When ultrasonic transmission/reception means transmits ultrasonic waves downward to a metal inspection object 2 and receives ultrasonic waves reflected by the metal inspection object 2, to derive the orientation of a growth direction of a columnar crystal structure 5 with a bottom echo, which is the received reflected wave, it is determined that when the bottom echo 25 disappears in a process toward an end part 2a, the orientation of the growth direction of the columnar crystal structure 5 is directed toward the end part 2a side as it goes upward, and it is determined that when the bottom echo does not disappear in the process toward the end part 2a, the orientation of the growth direction of the columnar crystal structure 5 is directed toward the opposite side of the end part 2a as it goes upward.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 【課題】金属検査物の柱状晶組織の成長方向の向きを非破壊で把握する。【解決手段】超音波送受信手段により、金属検査物２に超音波を下向きに送信すると共に金属検査物２で反射した超音波を受信し、受信した反射波である底面エコーにより柱状晶組織５の成長方向の向きを導出するに際し、端部２ａに向かう過程で底面エコー２５が消失した際に、柱状晶組織５の成長方向の向きが、上に向かうに従って端部２ａ側に向いていると判断し、端部２ａに向かう過程で底面エコーが消失しない際に、柱状晶組織５の成長方向の向きが、上に向かうに従って端部２ａと反対側に向いていると判断する。【選択図】 図３
