Abstract To provide an encoder capable of communication with an external apparatus such as a computer using a communication line connecting the encoder and a control device.SOLUTION: An encoder 1 includes a communication section 12 capable of communication with first speed or second speed through a communication line 2. The encoder 1 also performs two-way communication with the first speed to a control device 3 connected through the communication line 2 and transmits position information P to the control device 3 each time receiving an inquiry command O1 from the control device 3 in a first cycle T1.
