Summary:To maintain high exhaust emission control rate of a catalyst irrespective of atmospheric pressure.SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine includes: a catalytic converter 22 disposed in an exhaust passage; an exhaust control valve 26 disposed downstream in the exhaust passage relative to the catalytic converter 22; and an atmospheric pressure sensor 44a for detecting atmospheric pressure.
