To maintain high exhaust emission control rate of a catalyst irrespective of atmospheric pressure.SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine includes: a catalytic converter 22 disposed in an exhaust passage; an exhaust control valve 26 disposed downstream in the exhaust passage relative to the catalytic converter 22; and an atmospheric pressure sensor 44a for detecting atmospheric pressure. The exhaust emission control system controls the opening of the exhaust control valve to be decreased when the atmospheric pressure is low as compared to that when the atmospheric pressure is high.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】大気圧に関わらず、触媒の排気浄化率を高く維持する。【解決手段】内燃機関の排気浄化装置は、排気通路内に配置された触媒コンバータ２２と、触媒コンバータ２２よりも下流の排気通路内に配置された排気制御弁２６と、大気圧を検出するための大気圧センサ４４ａと、を備える。大気圧が低いときには大気圧が高いときに比べて排気制御弁の開度を小さくする。【選択図】図１
