Summary:To provide an obstacle detection system in a vehicle traveling on a track and a method for the same which can detect, in high precision, a front obstacle on a track and its periphery.SOLUTION: An obstacle detection system comprises a monitoring area setting processing unit to set an obstacle monitoring area to detect an obstacle, a front obstacle monitoring unit to monitor an obstacle in the obstacle monitoring area using a sensor scanning the front of the train horizontally, and an obstacle detection unit to detect the obstacle in the obstacle monitoring area based on the monitoring result by the front obstacle monitoring unit.
