To provide a holding device which can hold a workpiece with pads having fluidity even if there is not enough space available at both sides of the workpiece.SOLUTION: A holding device 5 holds a workpiece and includes: a left arm unit 5L and a right arm unit 5R; a gripper body 6 which opens or closes these arm units 5L, 5R along a holding direction; pads 59, 59 having fluidity and provided at the arm units 5L, 5R; a vacuum pump which changes hardness of the pads 59, 59; and a roller unit 8 which causes the rollers 82, 82 to roll along surfaces of the pads 59, 59 to level the surfaces of the pads 59, 59.
