Summary:To provide an operation control method for a vehicle engine, which can suppress emissions from a TWC (Three Way Catalyst) more preferably than before.SOLUTION: A method is for performing active control on a vehicle engine having a three way catalyst in an exhaust path between a lean operation state and a rich operation state. In the method, a limit current type NOx sensor is disposed on a downstream side of the three way catalyst in the exhaust path, in which the NOx sensor has NH3 interference and can detect a changes in surrounding oxygen concentration, and at the timing when either detection of a change in oxygen concentration in exhaust gas flowing out of the three way catalyst or detection of NOx or NH3 is made first by the NOx sensor, the operating state of the vehicle engine is switched between the lean operating state and the rich operating state.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】従来よりも好適にTWCからのエミッションを抑制することができる、車両用エンジンの運転制御方法を提供する。【解決手段】排気経路に三元触媒を備える車両用エンジンを、リーン運転状態とリッチ運転状態との間でアクティブ制御する方法において、排気経路の三元触媒よりも下流側に、NH3干渉性を有するとともに周囲の酸素濃度変化をも検知可能な限界電流型のNOxセンサを配置し、NOxセンサによって、三元触媒から流出した排気における酸素濃度変化の検知あるいはNOxまたはNH3の検知のいずれかが最先になされたタイミングで、車両用エンジンの運転状態をリーン運転状態とリッチ運転状態との間で切り替える、ようにした。【選択図】図1
