Summary:To provide a detection method and the like that can achieve improvement of the sensitivity in detecting a target substance by using the surface enhanced fluorescence method.SOLUTION: A detection method includes: coupling a first substance fixed to a metal particle having magnetism and a second substance labeled with a phosphor to a target substance to form a composite (S101); causing the phosphor to emit fluorescence, and irradiating a predetermined area with excitation light having a predetermined wavelength and causing the metal particle to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (S102); applying magnetic field gradient to cause the composite to enter the predetermined area and/or to leave from the predetermined area (S103, S105); detecting over time the fluorescence from the predetermined area (S104, S106); and detecting the target substance based on the amount of change in intensity of the detected fluorescence (S107).
