To provide a reading device that can read, with a reading unit, a document up to a portion immediately before its leading end.SOLUTION: A housing supporting a document placing plate 11 has an upper opening and has a left end edge 31 of the opening as a butting part. A leading end of a document is butted to the left end edge 31, and the document is placed on the document placing plate 11 based on the position of the left end edge 31. The housing has a convex part 41. In determination of a reading range of a CIS unit 12, the convex part 41 is read by the CIS unit 12. From image data read by the CIS unit 12, a vertical edge 42 of the convex part 41 extending linearly in a main scanning direction and a lateral edge 44 of the convex part 41 extending linearly in a sub scanning direction are detected, and the reading range of the CIS unit 12 is determined based on the positions of the vertical edge 42 and the lateral edge 44.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3A 【課題】読取部により原稿の先端の間際まで読み取ることができる、読取装置を提供する。【解決手段】原稿載置板１１を支持する筐体は、上面開口を有し、その開口の左端縁３１を突き当て部として有している。左端縁３１には、原稿の先端が突き当てられ、原稿は、左端縁３１の位置を基準に原稿載置板１１上に載置される。また、筐体は、凸部４１を有している。ＣＩＳユニット１２の読取範囲の決定の際には、ＣＩＳユニット１２により凸部４１が読み取られる。そして、ＣＩＳユニット１２に読み取られた画像データから、主走査方向に直線状に延びる凸部４１の縦エッジ４２および副走査方向に直線状に延びる凸部４１の横エッジ４４が検出され、縦エッジ４２および横エッジ４４の位置を元に、ＣＩＳユニット１２の読取範囲が決定される。【選択図】図３Ａ
