To provide a virtual image display device in display form suitable for a use environment.SOLUTION: A HUD device serving as virtual image display device is configured to be mounted in a vehicle and displays virtual image to be superimposed on the scene outside the vehicle. The HUD device comprises: a projection system displaying an image and projecting display light for the image; an intermediate image formation element receiving the display light and forming an intermediate image of the virtual image; an F-number variable mechanism 51 changing F-number of the projection system; and an F-number control part 63 controlling the F-number variable mechanism 51 so that, under a dark environment where brightness of the periphery of the virtual image is small, the F-number increases with respect to a bright environment where the brightness is greater than under the dark environment.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4 【課題】使用環境に適した表示形態の虚像表示装置を提供する。【解決手段】虚像表示装置としてのＨＵＤ装置は、車両に搭載されるように構成され、車両外の景色と重畳するような虚像を表示する。ＨＵＤ装置は、画像を表示し、画像の表示光を投射する投射系と、表示光を受光して虚像の中間像を結像する中間像結像素子と、投射系のＦナンバーを変更するＦナンバー可変機構５１と、虚像の周囲の明るさが暗い暗環境下では、暗環境下よりも明るさが明るい明環境下に対してＦナンバーが大きくなるように、Ｆナンバー可変機構５１を制御するＦナンバー制御部６３と、を備える。【選択図】図４
