Summary: | To provide a polarizing element having a high transmittance for polarized light along a transmission axis and a low reflectance for polarized light along an absorption axis without adjusting a pitch, width or height of projections.SOLUTION: A polarizing plate of the present invention is a polarizing element having a wire grid structure including a transparent substrate 20 and projections 40 which are arranged on a main surface 22 at a pitch p40 shorter than a wavelength of light in a use band and extend in a Y direction. The projection has a laminate 50 in which dielectric layers 52 and conductive layers 54 are alternately stacked into two or more sets along a Z direction. The conductive layers 54 include a first conductive layer 55 having absorptivity for the light in the use band, and a second conductive layer 56 having reflectivity for the light in the use band. The first conductive layer 55 is disposed as the conductive layer 54 nearest to the incidence side of light.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
