Summary:To selectively improve the spectral characteristic of a color component light by a simple configuration without requiring a major change to the constitution of an existing device.SOLUTION: A projection type video display device 1 comprises an LD 101, a separation element 220, a phosphor 233, and an optical system. The LD 101 generates a first color component light. The separation element partly transmits the first color component light at some instant, partly reflects the first color component light, and transmits a second color component light that is different from the first color component light. The phosphor 233 is excited by the first color component light transmitted through the separation element and generates a second color component light. The optical system synthesizes the first color component light having entered the separation element from the LD 101 and reflected by the separation element and the second color component light having entered the separation element from the phosphor 233 and transmitted through the separation element with each other.
