Abstract To shorten recording time while suppressing a discharge failure.SOLUTION: An ink jet recording device includes: a recording head which has a discharge port surface formed with a discharge port for discharging ink; an ink tank which stores ink supplied to the recording head; a supply flow passage; a recovery flow passage; circulation means which circulates ink between the ink tank and the recording head; a cap which is movable between a cap position for capping the discharge port surface and a retreat position for retreating from the discharge port surface; and control means which controls to start circulation of ink by the circulation means after the cap starts moving from the cap position to the retreat position when performing a recording operation by the recording head.
