Summary:To shorten recording time while suppressing a discharge failure.SOLUTION: An ink jet recording device includes: a recording head which has a discharge port surface formed with a discharge port for discharging ink; an ink tank which stores ink supplied to the recording head; a supply flow passage; a recovery flow passage; circulation means which circulates ink between the ink tank and the recording head; a cap which is movable between a cap position for capping the discharge port surface and a retreat position for retreating from the discharge port surface; and control means which controls to start circulation of ink by the circulation means after the cap starts moving from the cap position to the retreat position when performing a recording operation by the recording head. The control means moves the cap from the retreat position to the cap position before starting circulation of ink by the circulation means when a lapse time until the circulation of ink is started from the movement of the cap exceeds a threshold even when performing the recording operation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 14 【課題】 吐出不良を抑制しつつ記録時間を短縮する。【解決手段】 インクを吐出する吐出口が形成された吐出口面を有する記録ヘッドと、記録ヘッドへ供給されるインクを貯留するインクタンクと、供給流路と、回収流路と、インクタンクと記録ヘッドの間でインクを循環させる循環手段と、吐出口面をキャップするキャップ位置と吐出口面から退避する退避位置とに移動可能なキャップと、記録ヘッドによる記録動作を行う場合は、キャップのキャップ位置から退避位置への移動を開始した後、循環手段によりインクの循環を開始するように制御する制御手段を備え、制御手段は、記録動作を行う場合であっても、キャップの移動からインクの循環が開始されるまでの経過時間が閾値を超える場合は、循環手段によるインクの循環を開始する前にキャップを退避位置からキャップ位置へ移動させる。【選択図】 図14
