Summary:To provide an imaging apparatus and a control method thereof capable of achieving a satisfactory image quality while preventing increase of read-out time for acquiring a focus detecting signal.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: imaging means that has at least a first mode and a second mode; and control means that performs a read-out operation on a first line in the first mode, and performs a read-out operation on a second line in the second mode and in a mode difference from the second mode. The read-out operation in the first mode made on the first line is carried out in a first read-out period; the read-out in the second mode made on the second line is carried out in a second read-out period; and the read-out in the mode difference from the second mode made on the second line is carried out in a third read-out period.
