To provide a method for producing surface-modified silica particles which hardly suffer the growth of mold when stored for long periods under high-temperature and high-humidity environment.SOLUTION: A method for producing surface-modified silica particles comprises: a step (1) of granulating silica particles by sol-gel method with the use of a tetraalkoxysilane with a chlorine content of 0.8 ppm to 5 ppm as a raw material to obtain a silica particle suspension; a step (2) of removing a solvent from the silica particle suspension with the use of a supercritical fluid to obtain powder; and a step (3) of surface-treating the powder with an organic silicon compound in the supercritical fluid.SELECTED DRAWING: None 【課題】高温高湿環境下に長期に保管した際にカビが発生しにくい表面改質シリカ粒子を製造する製造方法を提供する。【解決手段】塩素濃度が０．８ｐｐｍ以上５ｐｐｍ以下であるテトラアルコキシシランを材料にしてゾルゲル法によりシリカ粒子を造粒しシリカ粒子懸濁液を得る工程（１）と、超臨界流体を用いて前記シリカ粒子懸濁液から溶媒を除去して粉体を得る工程（２）と、超臨界流体中で前記粉体を有機ケイ素化合物により表面処理する工程（３）と、を含む表面改質シリカ粒子の製造方法。【選択図】なし
