Summary: | To provide a projection optical system and a projection type display device having improved performance capable of reducing influence to imaging performance by adhesion or the like of foreign matters in an optical system that comprises a combination of a reflection optical system and a refraction optical system and forms an intermediate image.SOLUTION: A projection optical system forms an intermediate image MI in a position being a conjugate with a reduction side image-forming surface, and forms a final image being a conjugate with the intermediate image MI on an enlargement side image-forming surface.
