To allow efficient completion of version upgrade of a controlled device by a control device or the like while also taking security into account.SOLUTION: An information processing system comprises a control device and a controlled device connected in communication with each other via a network. The control device performs encrypted communication to/from the controlled device and acquires identification information for determining necessity of update processing for update target information stored in the controlled device to determine the necessity of the update processing for the update target information. When the update processing is necessary, non-encrypted communication is performed to/from the controlled device, and update information for performing the update processing for the update target information is transmitted to the controlled device. In response, the controlled device transmits the identification information for determining the necessity of the update processing for the update target information stored in the controlled device to the control device by the encrypted communication.
