Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-speed response mode liquid crystal display device having improved contrast.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device according to one embodiment includes first and second substrates and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes a plurality of scan lines, a plurality of signal lines, a first electrode, a second electrode, and a light shielding layer. One of the first and second electrodes is a pixel electrode and the other is a common electrode. The first electrode includes a plurality of branch areas extending in a first direction and an axial area extending in a second direction and connecting each branch area. A gap area extending in the first direction between adjacent branch areas exists. The light shielding layer includes a plurality of first parts superimposed on the branch areas or the gap area, extended in the first direction, and arranged in the second direction.
