Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for making components having passive strain indicators and systems for monitoring strain, and in particular, passive strain indicators which may be formed separately from a component and joined to the component.SOLUTION: A passive strain indicator 40 comprises a plurality of fiducial markers 12, which are formed on a shim by deforming selected locations on the shim, and is formed by attaching a portion of the shim to an outer surface 14 of a component 10. The formation of the component 10 and the formation of the passive strain indicator 40 are performed separately prior to attaching the shim to the outer surface 14 of the component 10. A system for monitoring strain includes a component 10 and a passive strain indicator 40. A portion of the passive strain indicator 40 is integrally joined with an outer surface 14 of the component 10.
