PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tapered lead-in portion for an interference fit fastener.SOLUTION: An assembly comprises a first structural element and a second structural element having aligned holes, a fastener that occupies at least respective portions of these holes without having a surrounding sleeve, and an engagement component that is coupled to the fastener. The fastener comprises: a head portion; a circular cylindrical shank extending from the head portion; an engagement portion comprising external projection portions; and a transition part disposed between the shank and the engagement part. The transition portion comprises a tapered lead-in section that intersects the shank at a shank/lead-in portion intersection portion, and a radiused lead-in section that intersects the tapered lead-in section.
