Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tap changer and a protection method having less occurrence of a failure with simple configuration.SOLUTION: A tap changer in one embodiment has a semiconductor switch and a protection circuit. The semiconductor switch shuts off or turns on a current flowing on a part or all plural taps with respect to a stationary induction machine which is provided with the plural taps for switch the number of turns of winding. The protection circuit includes a nonlinear overvoltage limiting element which is connected in parallel to the semiconductor switch and has a capacity component to an extent that the nonlinear overvoltage limiting element does not change from a shut-off state to a conduction state due to a voltage between the terminals, which is generated during shut-off or turning-on operation of the semiconductor switch.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】故障の発生がより少ないタップ切換器及び保護方法を、より簡素な構成で提供することである。【解決手段】実施形態のタップ切換器は、半導体スイッチと、保護回路と、を持つ。半導体スイッチは、巻線の巻き数比を切り替えるための複数のタップが設けられた静止誘導電器に対し、前記複数のタップの一部または全部に流れる電流を遮断又は投入する。保護回路は、前記半導体スイッチと並列に接続される非線形過電圧制限素子を含み、前記半導体スイッチの遮断又は投入動作中に生じる端子間の電圧によって前記非線形過電圧制限素子が遮断状態から導通状態に変化しない程度の容量成分を有する。【選択図】図1
