Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently activate a monolith catalyst 12 with a limited heat quantity of exhaust gas and, in particular, to expedite reactivation of the monolith catalyst 12 after the same is cooled by low temperature exhaust gas.SOLUTION: A monolith catalyst 12 is stored in a case 11 with an axial center thereof being almost horizontal. The case 11 has: an inflow section 13 which faces an edge face at an upstream side of the monolith catalyst 12 and allows exhaust gas to flow into the monolith catalyst 12 in an almost horizontal direction; and an outflow section 14 which faces the inflow section 13 and allows the exhaust to flow out of the monolith catalyst 12 from a downstream side thereof in the almost horizontal direction.
