Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection device that enables operation of focus detection reducing wrong focus detection with respect to a surrounding subject or moving subject other than a main subject.SOLUTION: A focus detection device has: setting means that sets a first setting for implementing preferential focus detection of an area of a subject, or a second setting form implementing preferential focus detection of a designated area; determination means that determines a different focus detection area for the focus detection according to the setting of the setting means; selection means that makes an evaluation of a focusing state with respect to the focus detection area to select an area to be focused of the focus detection area; and control means that outputs a control signal for controlling a focus so as to be capable of obtaining image information focusing the area to be focused. The determination means is configured to, in the first setting, determine the focus detection area within a first area set so as not to implement the focus detection to an area of a subject detected outside the focus detection area, and, in the second setting, determine a second area narrower than the first area as the focus detection area on the basis of a designated position pertaining to the second setting.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6 【課題】主被写体以外の周辺被写体や移動被写体に対する誤った焦点検出を低減した焦点検出動作が可能な焦点検出装置を提供する。【解決手段】被写体の領域を優先して焦点検出を行う第1の設定、又は指定された領域を優先して焦点検出を行う第2の設定を設定する設定手段と、設定手段の設定に応じて異なる、焦点検出を行うため焦点検出領域を決定する決定手段と、焦点検出領域に対する合焦状態の評価を行って、焦点検出領域のうち合焦させる領域を選択する選択手段と、合焦させる領域に合焦した画像情報を得られるように焦点を制御するための制御信号を出力する制御手段と、を有し、決定手段は、第1の設定では、焦点検出領域の外で検出された被写体の領域に対して焦点検出を行わないように設定した第1の領域内で焦点検出領域を決定し、第2の設定では、第2の設定に係る指定の位置に基づき第1の領域より狭い第2の領域を焦点検出領域として決定する。【選択図】図6
