Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve ignitability at a start, in a diesel engine in which a helical port and a tangential port are connected to the same cylinder.SOLUTION: In a diesel engine 10 comprising: a first intake valve 16 arranged in a helical port 14 connected to a cylinder; a second intake valve 18 arranged at a tangential port 12 connected to the cylinder, and having a larger working angle than the first intake valve 16; and a variable valve mechanism 20 which can independently change opening timing of the first intake valve 16 from the opening timing of the second intake valve 18, the variable valve mechanism 20 is controlled so that the opening timing of the first intake valve 16 is retarded more than the opening timing of the second intake valve 18.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
