Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing racemic α-amino acid that becomes a detergent or a precursor of a detergent having no or less coagulation tendency or the like at a good yield.SOLUTION: A method of producing racemic α-amino acid or glycin is a method of making a corresponding α-hydroxy carboxylic acid selected from hydroxy acetic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, α-hydroxyglutaric acid, isocitric acid, tartoronic acid, and tartaric acid, or a salt of at least one kind of corresponding α-hydroxycarboxylic acid react under presence of at least one kind of nitrogen compound (c) selected from primary and secondary amine sand ammonia and hydrogen, under the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst containing at least one kind of transition metal. The nitrogen compound (c) is selected from primary and secondary amines and ammonia, a reaction is performed at a temperature of from 150 o 280°C and under pressure of from 100 to 300 bar, and the pressure is set by injecting a hydrogen gas or a hydrogen-containing gas into a reaction system.SELECTED DRAWING: None
