Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation device and method, as well as observation control program that speeds up autofocus control for each observation, and can shorten a scanning time of an observation zone.SOLUTION: An observation device comprises: a stage 51; an image formation optical system 14 that an objective lens; a detection unit 18 that has displacement sensors 18a and 18b detecting a position in a vertical direction of a culture vessel 50; an image formation optical system control unit 21 that controls an image formation optical system drive unit 15 to move the objective lens in an optical axis direction on the basis of the position in the vertical direction of the culture vessel 50; and a horizontal direction drive unit 17 that causes the stage 51 to move in a main scan direction and in a sub-scan direction, and causes the stage to be reciprocated as to the main scan direction.
