PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel battery arranged so that the deformation of an electrolyte membrane accompanied by expansion of the membrane can be suppressed.SOLUTION: A fuel battery cell 10 comprises: a membrane-electrode assembly 26 arranged by joining an electrode catalyst layer to each face of an electrolyte membrane 21; a frame-like seal member holding the membrane-electrode assembly and having an opening region at a center thereof; and a water-absorbing member 40 having the properties of absorbing water and being expanded accompanying water absorption, which is disposed between an outer circumferential wall face 24a of a gas diffusion layer 24 joined to the electrode catalyst layer in the opening region, and an inner circumferential wall face 31a located at a periphery of the seal member on the side of the opening region in the seal member.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2 【課題】膜の膨らみを伴う電解質膜の変形を抑制する燃料電池の提供。【解決手段】電解質膜２１の両膜面に電極触媒層を接合した膜電極接合体２６を、中央に開口領域を有する枠状のシール部材で保持し、開口領域において電極触媒層に接合するガス拡散層２４の外周壁面２４ａと、シール部材における開口領域の側の周縁部位の内周壁面３１ａとの間に、吸水と吸水に伴う膨潤を起こす性状を有する吸水部材４０を配設する燃料電池セル１０。【選択図】図２
