Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoplastic resin film for a data storage tape which has handling property and surface flatness appropriate for being used as a support medium of a data storage tape, particularly having a thickness of less than 8 μm, and enables a well-shaped foundation layer, if provided, to be formed in a manner that curbs a defect therein and thereby curbs the defect in data storage to be obtained.SOLUTION: A thermoplastic resin film for a data storage tape has a foundation layer on one surface thereof and a supporting medium with a thickness of 8 μm or less. The surface of the thermoplastic resin film where the foundation layer is formed has a centerline average roughness (RaA) in a range from 5 to 22 nm. The surface of the thermoplastic resin film where the foundation layer is not formed has protrusions having a height of 50 nm or more with a density of 10 pieces per 900 μmor less.SELECTED DRAWING: None 【課題】本発明によれば、データストレージテープの支持体として用いたときに、特に厚みが8μmを下回るような支持体に、取扱い性と表面の平坦性とを具備させ、かつ下地層を設けた場合であっても、下地層を形状良く、かつ欠陥を抑制しつつ形成でき、その結果、得られるデータストレージの欠陥を抑えることができる、データストレージテープ用熱可塑性樹脂フィルムを提供することにある。【解決手段】一方の面に下地層が形成され、支持体となる厚さが8μm以下の熱可塑性樹脂フィルムであって、熱可塑性樹脂フィルムの下地層が形成される側の表面は中心線平均粗さ(RaA)が5〜22nmの範囲で、熱可塑性樹脂フィルムの下地層が形成されない側の表面は高さが50nm以上の突起が10個/900μm2以下であることを特徴とするデータストレージテープ用熱可塑性樹脂フィルム。【選択図】なし
