Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera system with an additional, cost efficient infrared illumination for a vehicle.SOLUTION: A camera system for a vehicle has: a capturing unit (2) for acquiring image data by capturing an object in an environment around the vehicle; an arithmetic processing unit (5) for processing the image data; a display unit (7) for displaying the image data processed by the arithmetic processing unit (5); and an illumination unit (9) capable of irradiating the object with light. The illumination unit (9) is adapted to emit infrared light by an infrared light source. The illumination unit (9) has an electric functional component (12) which is part of a functional unit of the vehicle.
