Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can provide good performance of cleaning an intermediate transfer body while suppressing image defects, such as streak images and image deletion, even when downsizing and accelerating the apparatus.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus eliminates electricity from a toner remaining on an intermediate transfer body 8 with first charging means 23 or charges the residual toner to have a polarity reverse to a regular charging polarity of the toner before scraping off the toner with a contact member 21 to improve performance of the contact member 21 to scrape off a toner. The image forming apparatus charges a passed toner that has not been scraped off during the above operation to have a polarity reverse to the regular charging polarity of the toner with second charging means 24 to electrostatically recover the toner from the intermediate transfer body 8 to an image carrier 1 at a primary transfer part N1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2 【課題】装置の小型化や高速化を図る場合であっても、スジ画像や画像流れなどの画像不具合を抑制しつつ、中間転写体の良好なクリーニング性能を得ることが容易な画像形成装置を提供する。【解決手段】第１の帯電手段２３によって中間転写体８上の残トナーを除電するか又はトナーの正規の帯電極性とは逆極性に帯電させた後に、当接部材２１によって掻き取ることで、当接部材２１によるトナーの掻き取り性能を向上させる。さらに、その際に掻き取りきれなかったすり抜けトナーを第２の帯電手段２４によってトナーの正規の帯電極性とは逆極性に帯電させ、１次転写部Ｎ１で中間転写体８から像担持体１に静電的に回収させる。【選択図】図２
