PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus including a cleaning part that satisfactorily and efficiently removes paper powder of a recording medium adhered to an image carrier at a transfer position without quickening light deterioration of the image carrier.SOLUTION: At a position on the downstream side in a direction of travel of a photoreceptor drum 1 (image carrier) with respect to a transfer position (transfer nip) and a position on the upstream side in the direction of travel of the photoreceptor drum 1 with respect to a cleaning part 2, an image forming apparatus irradiates, with light K1, predetermined positions X on a surface of the photoreceptor drum 1 corresponding to both ends in the width direction of a recording medium P that is conveyed to the transfer position, so as to reduce a surface potential of the predetermined positions X on the photoreceptor drum 1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 【課題】像担持体の光劣化を早めることなく、転写位置で記録媒体から像担持体に付着した紙粉がクリーニング部で良好かつ効率的に除去される、画像形成装置を提供する。【解決手段】転写位置（転写ニップ）に対して感光体ドラム１（像担持体）の走行方向下流側の位置であって、クリーニング部２に対して感光体ドラム１の走行方向上流側の位置において、転写位置に搬送される記録媒体Ｐの幅方向両端部に対応する感光体ドラム１の表面の所定位置Ｘに光Ｋ１を照射して、感光体ドラム１における所定位置Ｘの表面電位を減ずるように構成している。【選択図】図３
