Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that an external heating system fixing device has a configuration in which a backup unit is provided in a far position from a heating unit, so that when the device runs away and temperature abnormally rises, it is difficult to avoid that the temperature of the backup unit exceeds heatproof temperature by using a safety device provided in the heating unit.SOLUTION: The fixing device includes a roller, a heating unit which heats the roller from the outside of the roller, the backup unit which forms a nip part together with the roller, a temperature detection part which detects the temperature of the heating unit, and a control part which controls power supplied to the heating unit, so that the detection temperature of the temperature detection part becomes target temperature and heats a recording material on which an image is formed, while conveying it in the nip part, to fix the image to the recording material. A safety element which is operated when the backup unit reaches abnormal temperature, to cut off the power supplied to the heating unit is provided in the backup unit.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12 【課題】 外部加熱方式の定着装置は、バックアップユニットが加熱ユニットから遠い位置に設けられる構成になる。従って、装置が暴走して異常昇温した場合、加熱ユニットに設けた安全装置を使用してバックアップユニットが耐熱温度を超えないようにすることが難しいという課題がある。【解決手段】 ローラと、前記ローラの外部から前記ローラを加熱する加熱ユニットと、前記ローラと共にニップ部を形成するバックアップユニットと、前記加熱ユニットの温度を検知する温度検知部と、前記温度検知部の検知温度が目標温度になるように前記加熱ユニットに供給する電力を制御する制御部と、を備え、前記ニップ部で画像が形成された記録材を搬送しながら加熱し前記画像を記録材に定着する定着装置において、前記バックアップユニットが異常温度に達したときに作動して前記加熱ユニットに供給する電力を遮断する安全素子が前記バックアップユニットに設けられている。【選択図】 図12
