PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device, system and method for protecting a print head from damage due to collision of a medium sheet with acoustic detection of a medium.SOLUTION: A print head protection system is used together with an ink jet printer which comprises a print head 23 and a belt 46 moving on a platen 48. Acoustic sensors 54 are arrayed in the lateral direction with respect to the process direction. The acoustic sensors 54 measure a thickness of combination of the belt 46, the platen 48 and a medium sheet 34. An analyzer detects whether or not the medium sheet 34 is brought into contact with a medium transport part. When the thickness is lower than a prescribed value, an error signal indicating no contact between the medium sheet 34 and the medium transport part is generated. A reduction control device operates so as to reduce damage on the print head in response to the signal.
