Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coolant composition that can enhance a fuel consumption effect of an internal combustion engine and to provide a method for operating an internal combustion engine using the coolant composition.SOLUTION: The coolant composition comprises a viscosity characteristics modifier, at least one kind of alkali metal compound selected from an alkali metal salt and an alkali metal hydroxide, and a base agent. The viscosity characteristics modifier is a compound represented by formula (1) and the base agent comprises at least one kind of alcohol selected from monohydric alcohol, dihydric alcohol, trihydric alcohol and glycol monoalkyl ether and water. The coolant composition has a kinematic viscosity at 25°C of 8.5 mm/s or more and a kinematic viscosity at 100°C of 2.0 mm/s or less.
