Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide intravascular catheters for treating cardiac arrhythmia, such as atrial fibrillation, by tissue diagnostics with mapping and by treatment with ablation in an atrium or ventricle.SOLUTION: A catheter has a distal electrode matrix comprising a multitude of electrodes 37, 38D, 38P with a plurality of spines 17P, 17e, 17f, 17g, 17h, 17D arranged in a parallel configuration. The matrix can be dragged against a tissue surface upon deflection (and/or release of the deflection) of the catheter. The spines generally maintain their parallel configuration and the multitude of electrodes generally maintain their predetermined relative spacing in a grid formation as the matrix is dragged across the tissue surface in providing very high density mapping signals.
