Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid damage to a ceramic monolith from road shock and vibration, to compensate for thermal expansion difference, and to prevent exhaust gas from passing between the monolith and a metal housing.SOLUTION: A pollution control device 10 comprises a metallic casing 11 with a conical inlet end 12 and outlet end 13. A monolithic pollution control element 20 including inorganic fibers and surrounded by a tubular, continuous, seamless, compressible, resilient mounting article or mat 30 is disposed within the casing 11.The mounting article 30 serves to tightly but resiliently support and hold the monolithic element 20 within the casing 11 and seals the gap between the pollution control element 20 and the casing 11, thereby reducing, minimizing, or preferably preventing exhaust gases from bypassing the pollution control element 20.
