The sealing member includes a first portion which covers the light emitting element and contains a fluorescent material, and a second portion which is arranged over the first portion and does not substantially contain a fluorescent material. The fluorescent material contains fluoride fluorescent material particles 7 which have a chemical composition activated with tetravalent manganese ions and represented by general formula and have a surface region where tetravalent manganese ion concentration is lower than tetravalent manganese ion concentration of an internal region of the fluorescent material particles. 【課題】信頼性に優れる発光装置を提供する。【解決手段】凹部2を形成する側壁を有するパッケージ3と、凹部2に配置された発光素子4と、発光素子4を被覆する封止部材を備えており、封止部材が、前記発光素子を被覆し蛍光体を含む第一の部位と、その第一の部位上に配置され、蛍光体を実質的に含まない第二の部位とを有し、蛍光体が、4価のマンガンイオンで付活された、一般式で示される化学組成を有し、蛍光体粒子の内部領域の4価のマンガンイオン濃度よりも、4価のマンガンイオン濃度が低い表面領域を有するフッ化物蛍光体粒子7を含む発光装置1である。【選択図】図1
