Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately read identification information stamped on a surface of a steel material.SOLUTION: An identification information reader 1 includes: an application unit 30 applying a coating agent D onto a stamped surface 11 of a steel material 10 on which identification information 12 is stamped; an illumination unit emitting light onto the stamped surface 11 onto which the coating agent D is applied; an imaging unit 31 imaging the stamped surface 11 irradiated with the light; and an image processing unit 38 reading the identification information 12 from an image of the stamped surface 11 obtained by the imaging unit 31. The application unit 30 continuously applies the coating agent D onto the stamped surfaces 11 of a plurality of steel materials 10 during transport.
