Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxidation process for preparing a fluorinated carboxylic acid, which is inexpensive and efficient and has readily available starting materials, making it useful on an industrial scale.SOLUTION: A method for preparing a fluorinated carboxylic acid and its salt comprises exposing a fluorinated alcohol of the formula (A) defined by A-CH-OH to at least one first oxidizing agent and at least one second oxidizing agent to produce a highly fluorinated carboxylic acid or its salt of the formula (B) defined by A-COOM. [In the formulas, Mrepresents a cation; and A represents a residue such as Rf-[O]-CX"Y"-[O]-CX'Y'-[O]-CXY-.
