Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress unevenness in image density which could occur in an alternating voltage development system in which a toner is reciprocated within a development area.SOLUTION: Provided is a development device for applying an alternating voltage to a developer carrier in order to form, in the development area, an alternating magnetic field for reciprocating a toner in a developer and moving it from a developer carrier side to a latent image carrier side, wherein a voltage with a waveform of the alternating voltage in which a narrow width waveform, which is at least one of a development narrow width waveform C1 with a development-direction polarity having a voltage value larger in absolute value than, and a time width narrower than, a development waveform section C2 of the alternating voltage and a non-development narrow width waveform D1 with a non-development-direction polarity having a voltage value larger in absolute value than, and a time width narrower than, a non-development waveform section D2 of the alternating voltage, so that its relative position against the waveform of the alternating voltage will change in time, is applied to the developer carrier. 【課題】現像領域内でトナーを往復運動させる交番電圧現像方式において生じ得る画像濃度ムラを抑制することを課題とする。【解決手段】現像剤中のトナーを往復運動させながら現像剤担持体側から潜像担持体側へ移動させる交番電界を現像領域に形成するために、現像剤担持体に交番電圧を印加する現像装置において、現像方向の極性をもち上記交番電圧における現像波形部分C2よりも絶対値が大きい電圧値を有しかつ時間幅が狭い現像狭幅波形C1、及び、非現像方向の極性をもち上記交番電圧における非現像波形部分D2よりも絶対値が大きい電圧値を有しかつ時間幅が狭い非現像狭幅波形D1のうちの少なくとも一方である狭幅波形を、該交番電圧の波形に対する相対位置が時間変化するように該交番電圧の波形に含ませた電圧を、上記現像剤担持体に印加する。【選択図】図5
