Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrifier which includes a cleaning member and has a simple configuration and is capable of maintaining stable electrification characteristics for a long period of time to suppress the occurrence of abnormal images.SOLUTION: The electrifier is provided with a charging roller 41 for charging a surface of a photoreceptor, a cleaning roller 42 for cleaning the charging roller 41, and a damping member 43 for applying a load to rotation of the cleaning roller 42. A first cleaning mode is provided where the damping member 43 is separated from a cleaning roller core bar 42a and the cleaning roller 42 is rotated in accordance with rotation of the charging roller 41. A second cleaning mode is provided where the damping member 43 is pressed to the cleaning roller core bar 42a to apply a load to rotation of the cleaning roller 42 and thereby a linear velocity of the cleaning roller 42 is reduced relative to the charging roller 41 or the cleaning roller 42 is stopped.
