Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrifier which includes a cleaning member and has a simple configuration and is capable of maintaining stable electrification characteristics for a long period of time to suppress the occurrence of abnormal images.SOLUTION: The electrifier is provided with a charging roller 41 for charging a surface of a photoreceptor, a cleaning roller 42 for cleaning the charging roller 41, and a damping member 43 for applying a load to rotation of the cleaning roller 42. A first cleaning mode is provided where the damping member 43 is separated from a cleaning roller core bar 42a and the cleaning roller 42 is rotated in accordance with rotation of the charging roller 41. A second cleaning mode is provided where the damping member 43 is pressed to the cleaning roller core bar 42a to apply a load to rotation of the cleaning roller 42 and thereby a linear velocity of the cleaning roller 42 is reduced relative to the charging roller 41 or the cleaning roller 42 is stopped. 【課題】クリーニング部材を有した帯電装置であって、簡単な構成で長期に亘り安定した帯電性を維持でき、異常画像の発生を抑制できる帯電装置を提供する。【解決手段】帯電装置に、感光体の表面を帯電する帯電ローラ41と、帯電ローラ41を清掃するクリーニングローラ42と、クリーニングローラ42の回転に負荷を与える制動部材43とを設けた。そして、クリーニングローラ芯金42aから制動部材43を離間させ、帯電ローラ41に対してクリーニングローラ42を従動回転させる第1のクリーニングモードを設けた。また、クリーニングローラ芯金42aに制動部材43を押し当ててクリーニングローラ42に回転の負荷を掛け、帯電ローラ41に対してクリーニングローラ42の線速を遅くしたり、クリーニングローラ42を停止させたりする第2のクリーニングモードを設けた。【選択図】図6
