Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus configured to detect the amount of scumming on a latent image carrier more accurately, on a surface of an endless moving body on which a scumming detection image is to be transferred from the latent image carrier.SOLUTION: A printer 100 includes: a photoreceptor 1; a charging device 2; an exposure apparatus which writes a latent image on the photoreceptor 1; a developing apparatus 4 for developing the latent image on the photoreceptor 1; a transfer unit 30 which transfers the toner image on the photoreceptor 1 to an intermediate transfer belt 15; and a reflection type optical sensor 150 which detects the amount of toner sticking on the intermediate transfer belt 15. In scumming detection mode for detecting a degree of scumming on the photoreceptor 1, a blank image formed on the surface of the photoreceptor 1 is transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 15, to detect the amount of toner sticking thereto by means of the reflection type optical sensor 150. Transfer condition from the photoreceptor 1 to the intermediate transfer belt 15 is set so that a transfer rate is higher in the scumming detection mode than in usual image forming operation. 【課題】地汚れ量検出用画像を潜像担持体から転写される無端移動体の表面上で、潜像担持体上の地汚れ量を従来よりも正確に検出することができる画像形成装置を提供する。【解決手段】感光体1と、帯電装置2と、感光体1に潜像を書き込む露光装置と、感光体1上の潜像を現像する現像装置4と、中間転写ベルト15に感光体1上のトナー像を転写する転写ユニット30と、中間転写ベルト15上のトナーの付着量を検出する反射型光センサ150と、を備え、感光体1上の地汚れの程度を検出する地汚れ量検出モードとして、感光体1の表面に形成した白紙画像を中間転写ベルト15に転写し、反射型光センサ150でトナーの付着量を検出する制御を行うプリンタ100において、地汚れ量検出モードでは、感光体1から中間転写ベルト15への転写条件を通常の画像形成時よりも転写率が高まるように設定する。【選択図】図1
