Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide that is able to restrict increase in the oscillation line width of a single mode LD and to provide an optical integrated element that has the optical waveguide.SOLUTION: An optical waveguide comprises: an active optical waveguide area 14; a passive optical waveguide area 13 having an effective refractive index different from that of the active optical waveguide 14; and a junction area 25 that joins the active optical waveguide area 14 and the passive optical waveguide area 13, and has a waveguide width greater than the active optical waveguide area 14 and the passive optical waveguide area 13. The waveguide width of the active optical waveguide area 14 and the waveguide width of the passive optical guide area 13 continuously spread over the junction area 25 from the active optical waveguide area 14 and passive optical guide area 13. The proportion of the active optical waveguide area 14 to the passive optical guide area 13 in a cross-section perpendicular to the traveling direction of light passing through the junction area 25 continuously changes in the traveling direction of light. 【課題】単一モードLDの発振線幅の増大を抑制することが可能な光導波路および当該光導波路を有する光集積素子を提供する。【解決手段】光導波路は、活性光導波路領域14と、活性光導波路領域14の等価屈折率とは異なる等価屈折率を有する受動光導波路領域13と、活性光導波路領域14と受動光導波路領域13とを接合し、活性光導波路領域14の導波路幅および受動光導波路領域13の導波路幅よりも広い導波路幅を有する接合領域25とを備え、活性光導波路領域14の導波路幅および受動光導波路領域13の導波路幅は、活性光導波路領域14および受動光導波路領域13から接合領域25に渡って連続的に広がり、接合領域25を通過する光の進行方向に対して垂直な断面における、活性光導波路領域14と受動光導波路領域13とが存在する割合は、光の進行方向に沿って連続的に変化する。【選択図】図1
