Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refractory having excellent thermal shock resistance, and a refractory structure using the refractory.SOLUTION: In a refractory, as chemical components after heat treatment in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 500°C, comprising free carbon by 2.0 to 7.0 mass%, and also, as the free carbon, comprising linking carbon linking a refractory structure, the apparent porosity is 4 to 12% and also, the total volume of open pores with a size of 10 to 100 μm is controlled to 20 to 50 vol.% at a ratio in which the total volume of the open pores with a size of 200 μm or lower is defined as 100.
