Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive device capable of reducing the number of switching elements to reduce a cost of the entire system.SOLUTION: In a motor drive device having a multiplexed step-down chopper part (2) to drive a motor (4), in the case that a maximum value of a power running power at a power running operation of the motor (4) is large and a maximum value of a regenerative power at power regeneration from the motor (4) is small, the multiplexed step-down chopper part (2) is multiplexed by a plurality of step-down choppers (2A) and at least one bi-directional chopper (2B). Thereby, compared with the case that each step-down chopper (2A) is also a bi-directional chopper (2B), there is no need for adding a power regeneration diode (2e) and a step-up switching element (2f), and the number of switching elements is reduced for those.
