Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for classifying cells derived from a multiple sclerosis patient according to the probability to respond to type I interferon.SOLUTION: Provided is a method comprising the steps of: providing a sample containing the cells derived from a human individual which cells are typically reactive to the type I interferon exposure; determining the activity level of a pathway modulated by type I interferon; and classifying the cells on the basis of the determined activity level. The cells in the sample are preferably those cultured in the presence of type I interferon before determining the activity level of the pathway, that is, the activity is compared with the pathway activity of the sample cells before the culture. Preferably, the sample is derived from an individual not treated with type I interferon before the sampling. Preferably, this method is used, prior to starting the treatment with type I interferon, to determine whether the individual would be a good, normal or poor responder to the intended treatment.
